Name: Lauliet, DIANE Elizabeth
Position: Captain
Gender: Female
Age: 38
Appearance: Lauliet could be pretty, if it ever occurred to her to do so. She has a heart-shaped face with a rather pointed nose, and her long brown curls fall to her waist. However, Lauliet never really cares about being pretty - she dresses like one of the guys, in T-shirts and camo pants, and she is usually barefoot unless it is absolutely necessary to wear shoes. Her hair is usually piled on top of her head and pinned with a pen. The only concession she gives to being a girl is the silver bell she always wears around her wrist.
Personality: Lauliet - heaven help you if you call her Diane, or indeed anything other than Lauliet - is sarcastic most of the time, except when she's in a bad mood. The more she rolls her eyes, acts put-upon, or complains about the idiocy of her crew, the better mood she is actually in. Lauliet is un-girly enough to call a tomboy, though she has no aversion to dresses or pretty things - she just never finds herself in an occasion to need them. Despite her outwardly rough appearance, Lauliet is in fact quite decent, cool-headed, and intelligent enough to command the respect of her officers.
History: Lauliet has been fascinated by space ever since she was young. When she was 16 she took an astronomy camp with some of the students at her school, and from then on she was absolutely sold. She went to school at MIT, where she majored in astronomy, and from then on went to work for NASA. She never thought she'd actually be sent into space, but one of the top DRALST researchers was killed in a hydrogen explosion and she was the one randomly picked to take his place. Her assignation as captain of the Columbus was the best moment of her life.
RP Example:
"Hey, Captain Ell!"
"I told you not to call me that."
"Captain, you really need to see this, ma'am."
"What?" Lauliet turned to where her chief astronomer was sitting, fingers a blur over the digital keys. The thermal screen before him showed a dark indigo-black for the most part, with a curve of bright orange in the corner indicating the planet below's atmosphere. "It looks normal to me."
"Watch."
Lauliet did, and before her the orange arc bulged, twisted, and grew into an elongated, unfamiliar shape. Finally it split away, and Lauliet could see, layered in red, orange, and yellow, a sweeping, curved shape.
"What is it?" Lauliet said.
"That's what I was going to ask you," said the astronomer, sounding put-out. "It looks like some sort of... vessel."
"Our friends?"
"Could be. I don't know."
Lauliet swallowed, trying not to be too excited. If this was dangerous, rash action would put her crew at risk, but still... if there was life there, just a few klicks away...
Lauliet returned to her pilot.
"Switch off auto, engage reactors, and break orbit," she said.
"Captain? Are you sure we--"
"We're not running away, sir, and don't you dare even ask. We're getting a vantage point. We don't know what we're dealing with here."
"Yes, Captain. Engines are warming up. We should be at escape velocity in about a minute."
"Well, good." Lauliet stared around the cabin, and then, suddenly, her face broke into one of her rare, genuine grins. "Look alive, gentlemen," she said. "Whatever happens, this will be a day to remember."
